Crank 2: High Voltage - Swearing and nudity comprise this next installment in Statham’s Crank series. Halfway through the NC-17 trailer, we were already pumped to go see this.
Friday the 13th (2009) - This film isn’t a remake of the first film in the series despite its title. The trailer shows many (if not all) of the killings in the movie. A typical “teenagers out partying” plot makes this film look stale and the story of Jason, from our perspective, has nowhere to go. For what it’s worth, the cinematography looks well done, though trailers can be deceiving.
Duplicity - Character wise, Julia Roberts seems like a costar to Clive Owen, and their relationship may play the biggest part in the film. This film seems very familiar to another Owen film, The International. Paul Giamatti’s character is on the track to be overshadowed, as is the case with many of his past parts, which is disappointing to us.
Defiance - Daniel Craig is a great actor, but even his talent couldn’t save this film. There are too many things going on in this film for such a small setting and scope. Materials for living and building in the woods seem to appear out of thin air. Time is given no respect as days and weeks will pass in the same amount of time. On top of everything, many of the shots are boring and lifeless despite their potential to be great. A 137 minute movie about Craig’s immaculate leather jacket would have been more of a tribute to this heroic and legendary true story.
Frost/Nixon - Filmed in the documentary style similar to The Office. Even if you know of the historic interviews, this movie tells a much deeper story about the people involved. Most of the film takes place inside, resulting in a very flat film. However, for a two hour dialogue film, this movie excels. We’re skeptical that the actor chosen for Nixon was the best choice, though he carried the role well.
